catching up & big news
Sorry for the lack of updates. Last week we had many doctors' appointments and evaluations with therapists. It was pretty hectic. This week I've been a little under the weather and got my sleeping schedule really screwed up (which, if you don't know me that well, it takes a LOT for me to think I'm not sleeping enough at night). But now I think I'm back on track. We've also been working on Sophie's sleep patterns. We've been logging spit-ups for the GI doc, so we started logging her naps and sleep hours, too, based on a book I'm reading (The No-cry Sleep Solution). She sleeps fine at night, it's getting her to sleep that's the issue. She will be yawning and rubbing her eyes, but resist actually going to sleep for as long as she can. So we're trying to help her go to sleep at the first sign of these things, instead of letting her get overly tired, and then she can't go to sleep. This leads to the downward spiral of crankytime.
Anyway. The Dr visits went okay. She got her 6month shots and there was no side effects of that. And she weighed in at 11lb11oz (people no longer tell us how tiny she is!) She had a few visits with different therapists. One was followup for NICU "grads" and was pretty basic. The other was with Baylor in Dallas. They are going to help us develop her eating abilities and are working to get us into their rehab program soon, which will be great.
We also saw the cardiologist. The Big News is that she said that Sophie will need surgery again, which we knew was likely, we had just hoped to avoid it. Not sure when yet, but sometime this year. It's nothing urgent, we could put it off til next year or possibly later, but the doctor said that it's easier to do it sooner (before Sophie gets too mobile) and that there is no difference in risk or recovery to her doing it now versus later. They say 3-7days in the hospital and 6wks to fully recover. And it will be the same surgeon as her first repair, which is good. There is nobody better, I'm convinced. We meet with him next week for a consult. And after it is done, she won't have to be on the medications and she will be able to grow better. She won't be burning so many extra calories due to redundant circulation, and we won't have to powerfeed her so much.
So now that we know it needs to be done, we're looking forward to getting it over with. Of course, 2 days before we met with the cardiologist, we bought plane tickets for September to go to Niagara Falls for our 10th anniversary. (Oops!) So we'll have to work around that. That's okay, it will either give us time to recuperate from or rest up for it.

Wow!! There really is lots going on. I think you'll see huge progress after the surgery. It's great that you have a cardiac surgeon that you already know and trust and once that's behind you she's going to surprise you with how well she does. Stephanie, you probably don't remember but our family went with yours to Niagara Falls when you were about four years old. It's so beautiful I'm glad you're getting to do that again. I'll keep the prayers coming. Love you,
Aunt Sandy
