We've been doing a lot of reading to Sophie out of longer story books lately. Partly because she loves it and partly because they had a deal at school where you fill out a reading log with 6 hours of reading and you get a free ticket to Six Flags. We've read Charlotte's Web to her numerous times, all 3 of Beverly Cleary's The Mouse and the Motorcycle books twice, and The Fantastic Mr. Fox probably 3 times. Right now she and I are reading Little House in the Big Woods.
It's a little frustrating though because I read pretty fast and I know when I read to myself I skim some and skip things. Well, Sophie catches me on every little time I leave out a "he said" or say "the starry night" instead of "the dark, starry night." And she always starts her reprimand with "Actually..." or "You forgot..."
We are seeing a little improvement on the writing front. For most of the school year, it's been a constant source of frustration for her (and pain for the teacher's aide who receives all the hits and kicks!), but lately she's been doing better. At night, she's asked to write letters or for paper to do writing with. She's been getting better reports from her teacher. Last week she had 4 good days with only one bad report when she was throwing rocks on the playground, but at least that's not acting out *in* class. And another teacher told me that instead of wanting to sit and read by herself, Sophie actually did the writing assignment with them on her own.
