weight gain, finally!

Sorry for the lack of posts the past month.  I told myself I was going to be more diligent about this.  But we've had a lot of stuff going on that I'll explain later.  Sophie is doing well.  She has reliably learned the sign for "yes" now and definitely knows the difference between the two.  Before when you'd ask her a question and say "yes or no?" or "no or yes?" at the end, she'd say whatever the last choice was.  Now she definitely gets it.

We just had the monthly dietitian visit and Sophie finally broke the 23 pound mark! She had been in the 22 pound range since March and that was only 1lb heavier than November, and between May and June lost an ounce (although she keeps getting taller). But this month she packed on over a pound!

We'll have to wait to next month to see if it's a trend, but I hope so. After reading _Special Needs Kids Eat Right_ by Judy Converse, the first thing I took from it is that a lot of kids with developmental issues are just malnourished, and before you try special diets, elimination diets, supplements, etc, you should just make sure they are getting enough calories.

For a 2yo, she suggests 1200/day, but we were barely hitting 1000. Sophie has limited volume she can take, so short of trying to squeeze in one more meal somewhere during the day, all we could do was try to boost. So Stephanie and I decided we would do that by giving oils through her g-button regularly during the day. I try to do 5ml of flax seed oil (good for omega-3s, too) when she first wakes up, then we try to do 5ml of coconut oil a 2-3 times (usually around diaper changes), and then 2.5ml of cod liver oil
(also high in Vit A) at the start of the overnight feed .

Anyway, it's not a trend yet, but we are really excited. This is a huge for her. It's been a LONG time since we've had a significant gain.
