Getting to the bottom of things

Well, we went to see the GI doc this week and were surprised when he actually suggested we do something! (Usually it's, "well, let's change her diet and see you back here in 6wks") But I guess we convinced him that her issue seems to be one of not being able to handle volume. For the last couple of weeks, we've been slowing down the rate and decreasing the amount of food she gets, but upping the frequency. Now she's at the point where she just gets a slow, continuous feed for 22 hours (with a break from 4-6am), and she's handling it much better. Before when we'd give her infrequent larger feedings... well, let's just say she didn't absorb a lot of those calories. Anyway, the doctor wants to do an gastric endoscopy on the 29th. It's just a 10min procedure, but for infants does require general anesthesia, which is why he didn't want to do it without trying other things first. This time we had totally expected him to just say let's wait until after her surgery, which would put us at mid-late November. So we'll see what that brings.

Sophie and I had a visit in San Antonio last week. The actual travel part was not much fun for either of us, but that's part of it, I guess. We had a really good visit and got to see a lot of folks. And Sophie was pretty sweet during all that, which is good. I'll have to put up some pictures in the next day or so. In the meantime, here's her new wheels. She can just barely tippy-toe, which means she mostly goes backwards for now.

She has also started changing her sleep patterns on us (both chronologically and physically). For one thing, she's waking up earlier--somewhere around 5-6am for an hour or two while Stephanie's getting ready for work. Then she'll go back to sleep for a while at 7:30 or 8 and wake up about 9. She used to take a nap at 11 pretty regularly. Well, not anymore, but she still gets just as tired at 11, it seems, but just won't go to sleep til 1pm or so. In the meantime, she squirms around on the floor or in her playpen, constantly trying to pull out her feeding tube. Anyway, I know she's supposed to transition to just one or two bigger naps in the middle of the day. That would be nice.
