enrollment!

Like I said back in January, the speech therapists recommended that Sophie go to an intensive "day program" to help get her caught up on eating solid foods. Of course, there's a long wait to get in and it's easy to fall through the cracks with the admissions people, we found. So Stephanie had talked to the coordinator of the program back in February, and I called her again last week to check on Sophie's status. Today the coordinator called me back and said they had a cancellation, so Sophie can start Monday April 20th! This is ideal timing because it's right after Stephanie's busy season ends (if you haven't finished your taxes yet, what are you waiting for?).

For some reason, this session they're doing 4 days a week (m-r) instead of 5 (m-f), so that is also good for us because it's fewer trips to downtown Dallas and fewer billable hours they charge. From what I've learned, you go in at 8am and leave at 5pm; the kids work with a speech therapist, occupational therapist, and child behaviorist; they do 4 meals with them a day; 2 therapy sessions a day; as well as nap time, playtime, etc. It's training for the child and for the parents. So hopefully at the end she'll be eating and drinking "normally" for a child her age and getting most of her nutrition that way. We may still have to supplement that with tube feedings at night to help her weight gain until she gets caught up.

I'm sure it will be a lot of work (both for Sophie and us), but we are looking forward to it. Sophie has made a lot of progress in 6 months of outpatient therapy, so we're hoping this will just be a big leap for her.

The beginning of her school career!
