How come we just found out about this?

One of the good things about our reconnecting with ECI is the dietitian. She comes out once a month to the house and weighs and measures Sophie (so we don't have to risk germ exposure going to the pediatrician's office for a weight check), looks at her diet, and gives us recommendations on things we can do. This first time she mentioned a different formula that we could try that has more calories in it. Some background, typical baby formula is 20 cals/oz. Sophie used to get 24/oz. Then when she hit a year old, the GI doc told us it was okay to try Pediasure, which was 30c/oz. That's what she's been on since January. This new stuff is 45c/oz, so 50% more per volume. That is HUGE for us.

It is also lactose and gluten free, in case that matters. We'll see. But Sophie never did great on Pediasure, which I've read is not uncommon. So hopefully this stuff will be an improvement. We got some Friday and so far she's doing okay, but we cut the volume back some to ease into it. So we've been talking about it this weekend and saying how it could be revolutionary for us, and then "how come none of the doctors, therapists, or 3 other dietitians we've seen this year have mentioned it to us?"

Also on the "how come nobody told us this" front, we rent Sophie's feeding pump from a home healthcare supply. By now it would've been cheaper to just buy one, and we're mad we're paying "extra" for it. So Stephanie called and asked them if they have like a "lease-to-own" plan or something, and they said "oh you've paid enough, we can just transfer it over to you". Wow. Thanks for telling us that. The only thing is that we have to get the insurance company to call them and request it. This is aggravating because there's nothing more painful than dealing with the insurance co. It makes calling for support or billing at the phone company or your internet provider seem like a piece of cake. I'm not going to rant too much, but let me just say it took 6 weeks and 4 attempts to get a letter faxed from our doctor to them. Seriously.

In other news, we went camping this weekend with some friends from college (hi Sarah!) and the weather was fantastic. The campground was great, but a little noisy. Still, Sophie had a great time. One, because they had a good playground, but mostly she just had a ball running around and exploring everything. We've been hoping we'd be able to do some longer camping trips with her, but overnight was about all she/we can handle right now.
